Students become more interested and engaged in learning when they are offered voice and choice in the classroom. Research demonstrates that students learn and retain more when they are learning for themselves. Assisting students in asking questions that foster curiosity and encourage deeper thinking and understanding of people, places, events and institutions as well as guiding them in discovery of answers gives ownership of learning to the students. Participants will leave with a variety of adaptable strategies and Ideas for empowering student learning in the social studies classroom.
